· Evacuate the building in an orderly manner, to a designated safe holding area away from the building and fire lanes;
· Report the fire by calling 911 from a safe location;
· Give the building name and location of the fire;
· If corridors are smoke filled and exiting is dangerous, find safe shelter and contact 911 advising of your location;
IF AN ANNOUNCEMENT IS MADE VIA PAGING SYSTEM:
· Evacuate the building in an orderly manner, to the emergency meeting area away from the building and fire lanes;
· If corridors are smoke filled and exiting is dangerous, find safe shelter and contact 911 advising of your location and condition;
· Report any pertinent information to Emergency Responders (Security, Fire, EMS).
IMPORTANT:
Following an evacuation, no one shall enter the building until informed to do so by a member of the Workplace Health Committee or Emergency Personnel.

CHEMICAL SPILLS
1. Small spills of non-hazardous chemicals:

GAS LEAKS

1. Small leaks of no-hazardous gas:
· Attempt to find and stop the source of the leak;
· Call 911 giving your name and the nature and location of the leak.
2. Large leaks or leaks of hazardous gas:
· Evacuate the area closing the door behind you;
· Notify fellow employees via paging system and leave the building;
· Move 100meters away from the building and meet Fire Department personnel to provide information on the nature of the emergency;
· Re-enter the building only when Fire Personnel declares it safe to do so.
· Notify Workplace Health & Safety.
If you have any doubts about your safety or that of others in the area of a spill or leak, evacuate immediately.
Serious Injury, Illness or Death
· Do not move a seriously injured person except in a life threatening situation.
· Someone should stay with the person while another person calls FOR HELP (911). Give your name, location, and telephone. Give as much information as possible about the situation. Report to the Workplace Health & Safety Committee.
· Keep the injured person as calm and comfortable as possible. If necessary, administer First Aid.
· Remain with the person until medical assistance arrives.
· All injuries or accidents must be reported on forms available at your Department office.
· In the event of accidental serious injury or death, ensure Workplace Health & Safety is notified
Bomb Threat
· Bomb Threats are usually received by telephone.
· Should you receive a bomb threat, remain calm and attempt to obtain as much information as possible from the caller.
· While talking to the caller, have someone call police at 911 to immediately advise of the bomb threat.
· As soon as the caller hangs up, and give police all the relevant information (time you received the call, location of the bomb, type of device and time it is set to explode).
· Inform your supervisor. Stand by and await instructions.
· Senior staff in charge of the building is responsible for coordinating a response to the threat.
· Should you notice a suspicious object or package, contact 911 and your supervisor. Under no circumstances should you touch, tamper with or move any suspicious object.
If instructed to evacuate, move 100 meters from the building. Do not re-enter the building until instructed to do so by Emergency Personne.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM
The purpose of an Emergency Response Team (ERT) is to ensure an appropriate response in the event of an emergency. This team is comprised of trained personnel who will ensure the safety of building occupants and minimize property damage. There are two primary positions on the Emergency Response Team as follows:
1. Building Monitor – the supervisor/organizer/controller
2. Floor Captain(s) – the controller/evacuator/assister
Each of these individuals has an extremely important job to perform in the event of an emergency. The following pages contain a more extensive description of the responsibilities of each member of the Emergency Response Team. The Emergency Response Team will work to evacuate the building until the arrival of the Selkirk Fire Department. The fire department will take over the evacuation, with the assistance of the members of the Health & Safety Committee and are responsible for alerting building occupants of an emergency, keeping anyone from entering the building, and determining when or if the building is safe to re-enter.
ERT Building Monitors:
Building Monitors are familiar are available to assist in all emergencies that may occur on the premises. The Building Monitor will be responsible for the following:
• Knowing the entire building layout and the various escape routes.
• Knowing the location of/and how to operate a fire extinguisher.
• Knowing hazardous areas to be avoided during an evacuation.
• Inspecting and securing stairwells during an evacuation.
• Maintaining order and preventing panic during an evacuation.
• Directing and assisting Floor Monitors during an evacuation.
ERT Floor Captains:
A Floor Captain’s main responsibility is to search and secure his or her designated area or floor in the event of a fire. Response and Evacuation Plan and participate in evacuation drills.
Floor Captains are responsible for:
• Informally inspecting work areas for fire hazards or unsafe conditions and reporting infractions to the Health and Safety Committee.
• Assuming responsibility for notifying others in their area in the event of a fire or emergency evacuation.
• Educating their co-workers on evacuation routes and emergency plans.
• Reviewing procedures periodically to ensure new employees know how to evacuate.
• Providing assistance for disabled individuals, if necessary, during an evacuation.
• Directing occupants to evacuate the building and proceed to the designated safety area.
Checking conference rooms, lavatories, and storage areas for employees or visitors who may not have heard the evacuation announcement.
• Keeping people from returning to their floors before the “all clear” signal.
• Verifying with each searcher that their areas area accounted for.
• Floor Monitors should be full-time staff employees and be assigned one alternate in the event of an absence.
FULL BUILDING EVACUATION PROCEDURES
After the decision to evacuate the entire building has been made by the Fire Department, the following procedures should be followed:
1. At the sound of the announcement, all ERT personnel should immediately take their emergency positions and prepare for a full building evacuation.
2. Evacuated personnel shall congregate in the Emergency Evacuation Staging Area and remain there until a decision is reached to re-occupy the
building or send people home. The Emergency Evacuation Staging Area, unless otherwise stated, is on the east lawn area beside the parking lot
(east of the Service Department). Floor Monitors will then account for all individuals on their specific areas of responsibility. If someone is missing, the Fire Department must be notified immediately of the possibility that someone is still in the building and their likely whereabouts.
3. If and when conditions become safe for occupants to return to the building, the Fire Department will provide the “all clear” announcement. At this time, building occupants will be allowed to return to their offices.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION DRILLS
All building occupants will be required to participate in periodic emergency evacuation drills. The purpose of these drills is to ensure that all occupants become familiar with the plan, learn how to safely evacuate their areas, and become accustomed with emergency exits and their orderly use. These drills require that everyone respond to the given instructions and leave their areas immediately, either out of the building or to the designated area in an orderly manner.
At the time of an emergency evacuation drill, building occupants will follow the procedures set forth in the Emergency Action Plan. Instructions will be provided over the paging system. They will be asked to proceed via the exit to the Emergency Meeting Area and to remain there until the “all clear” announcement is given.
Drills will be conducted annually at a minimum. The time required for each drill will be about 6 minutes, followed by a short discussion on the outcome of the drill. The Health & Safety Committee will be responsible for maintaining the schedule and record log for the evacuation drills.
The Emergency Response Team will conduct all evacuation drills in accordance with the procedures set forth in the Emergency Action Plan.
EMERGENCY MEETING AREA
The attached map of Selkirk Chrysler shows the Emergency Meeting Area for the occupants of Selkirk Chrysler. In case of an evacuation, occupants will be instructed to congregate at this location and remain there until a decision is made by the Fire Department to re-occupy the building or send people home.
USING PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
FIRST THINGS FIRST:
In the event of a fire, safety and preservation of life are the first priorities. You are not required to fight a fire. If in doubt, get out! Never risk your life or safety to fight a fire!
Use this mental checklist to make a fight-or-flight decision. Attempt to use an extinguisher only if all of the following apply:
· The building is being evacuated.
· The Fire Department is being called (911).
· The fire is small, contained and not spreading beyond its starting point.
· The exit is clear, there is no imminent peril and you can fight the fire with your back to the exit.
· You can stay low and avoid smoke.
· The proper extinguisher is immediately at hand.
· You've read the instructions and know how to use the extinguisher.
CHOOSE A PROPER EXTINGUISHER:
Follow these guidelines to ensure the proper selection and use of portable extinguishers.
Extinguishers must be easily accessible, near the exit from a room or space. That way, you can fight the fire with your back to the exit and make a quick escape if flames get out of control.
Every portable extinguisher is labeled A, B, or C, which describes the types of fires that the extinguisher is effective against:
A is ordinary combustibles like wood, paper, and cloth;
B is flammable liquids, such as gasoline, toluene or cooking oil;
C is live electricity.
Virtually all portable extinguishers are rated ABC, for use on all 3 classes. Check the label to be sure!

• Providing assistance for disabled individuals, if necessary, during an evacuation.
• Directing occupants to evacuate the building and proceed to the designated safety area.
Checking conference rooms, lavatories, and storage areas for employees or visitors who may not have heard the evacuation announcement.
• Keeping people from returning to their floors before the “all clear” signal.
• Verifying with each searcher that their areas area accounted for.
• Floor Monitors should be full-time staff employees and be assigned one alternate in the event of an absence.
FULL BUILDING EVACUATION PROCEDURES
After the decision to evacuate the entire building has been made by the Fire Department, the following procedures should be followed:
1. At the sound of the announcement, all ERT personnel should immediately take their emergency positions and prepare for a full building evacuation.
2. Evacuated personnel shall congregate in the Emergency Evacuation Staging Area and remain there until a decision is reached to re-occupy the
building or send people home. The Emergency Evacuation Staging Area, unless otherwise stated, is on the east lawn area beside the parking lot
(east of the Service Department). Floor Monitors will then account for all individuals on their specific areas of responsibility. If someone is missing, the Fire Department must be notified immediately of the possibility that someone is still in the building and their likely whereabouts.
3. If and when conditions become safe for occupants to return to the building, the Fire Department will provide the “all clear” announcement. At this time, building occupants will be allowed to return to their offices.
EMERGENCY EVACUATION DRILLS
All building occupants will be required to participate in periodic emergency evacuation drills. The purpose of these drills is to ensure that all occupants become familiar with the plan, learn how to safely evacuate their areas, and become accustomed with emergency exits and their orderly use. These drills require that everyone respond to the given instructions and leave their areas immediately, either out of the building or to the designated area in an orderly manner.
At the time of an emergency evacuation drill, building occupants will follow the procedures set forth in the Emergency Action Plan. Instructions will be provided over the paging system. They will be asked to proceed via the exit to the Emergency Meeting Area and to remain there until the “all clear” announcement is given.
Drills will be conducted annually at a minimum. The time required for each drill will be about 6 minutes, followed by a short discussion on the outcome of the drill. The Health & Safety Committee will be responsible for maintaining the schedule and record log for the evacuation drills.
The Emergency Response Team will conduct all evacuation drills in accordance with the procedures set forth in the Emergency Action Plan.
EMERGENCY MEETING AREA
The attached map of Selkirk Chrysler shows the Emergency Meeting Area for the occupants of Selkirk Chrysler. In case of an evacuation, occupants will be instructed to congregate at this location and remain there until a decision is made by the Fire Department to re-occupy the building or send people home.
USING PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
FIRST THINGS FIRST:
In the event of a fire, safety and preservation of life are the first priorities. You are not required to fight a fire. If in doubt, get out! Never risk your life or safety to fight a fire!
Use this mental checklist to make a fight-or-flight decision. Attempt to use an extinguisher only if all of the following apply:
· The building is being evacuated.
· The Fire Department is being called (911).
· The fire is small, contained and not spreading beyond its starting point.
· The exit is clear, there is no imminent peril and you can fight the fire with your back to the exit.
· You can stay low and avoid smoke.
· The proper extinguisher is immediately at hand.
· You've read the instructions and know how to use the extinguisher.
CHOOSE A PROPER EXTINGUISHER:
Follow these guidelines to ensure the proper selection and use of portable extinguishers.
Extinguishers must be easily accessible, near the exit from a room or space. That way, you can fight the fire with your back to the exit and make a quick escape if flames get out of control.
Every portable extinguisher is labeled A, B, or C, which describes the types of fires that the extinguisher is effective against:
A is ordinary combustibles like wood, paper, and cloth;
B is flammable liquids, such as gasoline, toluene or cooking oil;
C is live electricity.
Virtually all portable extinguishers are rated ABC, for use on all 3 classes. Check the label to be sure!
